Stage 1: A 24” x 36” prepared M.D.F panel was given an initial wash of Raw Umber Acrylic. The drawing was also made with Raw Umber taking care to get the right proportions, perspective and composition correct. It is very important at this initial stage to get all these elements right as it will become more difficult to change as the painting progresses in the later stages.
Stage 2 : Starting with the oil paints a pattern of darks is laid in using thin transparent paint which is generally cool in hue.
Stage 3: The sky is now added which gives the painting its overall tonal balance and the composition of the clouds create a contrast and a dramatic background to the rest of the painting.
Stage 4: The darks are modified and some mid tones begin to be introduced and warm colours and tones of the roofs and their tiles are added.
Stage 5: The light areas of the painting are put in using thicker opaque paint and the buildings start to take on a 3 dimensional quality, some modelling of the trees in the mid distance is also an addition.
Stage 6: Re-enforced the painting around the buildings looking for stronger contrasts and radically reworked the tree line in places, giving the trees a 3D form and the lower areas I left relatively loosely painted to avoid a perfusion of detail.
